Though I have chosen to make use of optically realistic imagery, my work goes beyond the merely literal. My paintings attempt to record the miraculous within the ordinary. The boundaries between the ordinary and the sublime; the physical and the spiritual, are where I choose to connect with the viewer. Certain contemporary art conventions may not acknowledge how the spiritual is empowered by the way light touches a subject. They may overlook the transcendent power of merging figurative and expressive painting techniques. I believe that in so doing issues of sex, race, grief and prejudice can be more accurately depicted.
